this is my first time at trying to hatch my own chicks. I have a hova still air incubator with an auto turner. what should my temp range be? right now it has been ranging from 99 to 100.8

sorry, I had been told that a still air incubator should run hotter since the air is not circulated and even. I thought 99.5 is the temp that the egg should be. If the thermometer is registering 99.5 than the egg would be less than that. Although at this point it probably doesn't matter because I don't think the hovabator is working properly. I have 4 thermometers and at the moment they all have different temps. The analog is 98. The digital that came with the unit is 96. the indoor/outdoor digital that I bought on my own is 94 for the regular reading and 101 for the outdoor sesor reading (I have both the unit and the sensor in the incubator). I tested all of them with the temp of my house compared to the reading on my house thermostat and they all appeared to work at the onset. I'm not sure why they all have different readings. at this point I'm going to cancel the eggs at 5 days and if nothing is growing I'm throwing it all out and giving up.

NOTE: I dont' know how any of this reads but none of it is directed at BYC or the community. I'm just frustrated. I'ts been 5 days of stress trying to get the incubator regulated and then it got to the point where I just had to set the eggs.

Are the thermometers on the wire or on the top glass? Because they need to be on the wire. Do you have eggs in it yet, because i just got my hovabator to the right temp, it took 4 days for everything to be ready for eggs! LOL, so i would keep trying and be patient. Maybe move it to a warmer room so it doesnt have to work as hard to keep a temp .

I have eggs in already. I have a turner so the wire is not exposed. the thermometors are on top of the eggs.

You are going to have to develop a LOT more patience with incubator learning! I am on lockdown with my second batch. First was analmost total failure with a still air LG. Now we added a fan, weatherstripping, another thermometer, washcloths rather than sponges on lockdown and isolating the location better.
It's an art in addition to a science, so it's not as cut and dried as the instructions would have you think. I am glad I have a cheap source of experimental eggs ( mine) before I invest in some *real* eggs!
My personal opinion is that the actual precise temp probably doesn't matter as much as the range of temps. I fussed yesterday at lockdown because it took HOURS to get back up to 100 after I removed the turner, candled everything etc etc. Then you hear about eggs that had electricity out for a day and still survived.
Patience, practice, eventually, you will learn.
At least, that's my mantra!
