So, my co-worker was talking with me about buying some fresh eggs for her BF. I told her that I have mostly brown eggs, but I do get a small amount of the white ones, as I have only a few white egg layers. She looked at me dumbfounded. She said the brown were fine, but asked me how in the world I get white eggs! I explained to her that some breeds lay brown eggs, and some breeds lay the white ones-it just depends what kind of chickens you have. Again, a puzzled look. She then told me that she just thought that all eggs were originally brown...that the eggs are all "bleached" to white to sell in the stores!!! I couldn't contain myself. I busted out laughing and again explained how the egg color thing works. She said she never knew. OMG, I couldn't believe it! (She is 49 years old)

Just had to share another misconception. People are so removed from their food sources it is scary!

I know it's been said before, but why assume that people who know absolutely nothing about chickens and other assorted farm animals would know about chickens and eggs. People are poked fun at for not knowing how eggs are fertilized and how eggs are white, brown or blue and green. I still don't know how eggs are fertilized. Of course, I know that you need a rooster, but I don't know how he does it.

Most people know that eggs come in brown or white but few realize that the shades include pink, terra cotta, chocolate, green, blue, and even yellow. I love watching their expressions when I explain that one.

Equus5O - when chickens mate, the rooster deposits sperm into the hen's cloaca (vent). A rooster doesn't have a penis so you might hear this process referred to as a "cloacal kiss ". Apparently that's what it looks like. The hen uses the sperm to fertilize her eggs as she produces them. She doesn't have to mate each time she lays an egg, and can use the sperm for an extended period of time - I think it's up to a couple of weeks but I'm not certain.

Strangely, someone decided that "Cloacal Kiss" would be a good name for a band.

I don't see it as making fun of people. I see it more as incredulity at how far things have been removed from the farm. The fact that there are children out there who don't realize that carrots grow in the ground or that eggs are laid by chickens (one of my neighborhood kids couldn't believe it when he saw my hens), is just scary. It's sometimes funny to hear the wierd things people believe about the food they eat. I don't think they are stupid for thinking what they do, but I still find it amusing.

My neighbour across the street watched a special on chickens 2 nights ago. She was amazed that people are allowed to have chickens in NY. And she said she learned something new. That you don't need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs. She grew up on a cattle ranch as a kid and her dad had bought chickens. The chickens eventually got eaten by coons but she admited that she just never payed any attention to how things went with the chickens. Although she did know that eggs aren't bleached and that they come from chicken buts.

Great story....too cute....gotta laugh at that stuff. I agree that it is sad how far removed people are from the farm in today's world. That's why I educate my kids about where their food comes from...all the good stuff fresh from the farm!
