I have been thinking of getting a couple of female buttons (for pets...do not want to breed) for quite some time and I know they have to come inside for the winter but . . . I have an 8'x 15' pen outside that I put my little greek tortoise in for the summer. He is a vegetarian so all the plants are edible for him. There are several hides and plenty of plants to hide in. I can put netting over the pen so they don't get out but just wondering if the buttons and tortoise can be kept together? I have to bring Kramer in for the winter as well. The pen used to be my flower garden so it is surrounded by our deck on three sides.

Can you find Kramer?

Hi bluebird, beautiful garden. i know nothing about what you are asking....i do see kramer though..sent you a pm don't want ruin it for everyone.

hehehe...yep...very good herefordlovinglady!

Actually those pics are from two years ago. Kramer's pen is more overgrown now. I thought it would be a good summer home for buttons. We'll see what the experts have to say.

Are you thinking of button quail too?

BTW...great website! You have a beautiful family and some dang nice cattle!

I don't know about the buttons getting along with the tortoise, but I think that button quail would LOVE to have a summer home like that!
You would have to frame it and put up hardware cloth for walls & a ceiling, though. You'd also want to make a couple access doors so you can get to feed, water, & eggs that they lay.
I can't imagine that the quail would bother the tortoise... would he bother the quail?
I won't ship live birds, but if you would like to try to hatch some button eggs, I'll give you a good deal.

Paganbird, thank you for the info and your offer but, no, I really do not want to hatch eggs even tho they are such cute babies! I know Kramer wouldn't bother the quail. Birds land in his pen during the summer surching for food and he just ignores them.

Hes easy to find!!! Here I was hoping for a great hunt(I love a challenge)!! The fake tortoise threw me off for just a second! I'm sure the buttons would be fine. I haven't got mine yet (they'll be here on saturday). But I imagine if he did try to "get" them for what ever reason a tortoise would try to get a bird(if their is a reason). I bet they could get out of his way!

Thats a beautiful setup!! And by looking at it I can tell something about you.....and that is that....You do not own chickens OR you do not own chickens that are allowed in that area!

ETA. I read in your avatar you do have chickens. So what are they not allowed in that area? Or do you have very neat chickens? My gang would have that tore apart in 5 mins!

Well actually I have two chickens, bantams. I just picked them up in October. So they don't know about Kramer's garden. If I do get a couple buttons, I will put a net over the pen so there will be "NO CHICKEN TRESSPASSING".
