I posted before and everyone agreed (including myself) that my Cookie was a roo at 9 wks old b/c of large comb and wattle. Well now she is about 11 weeks old, and still has large comb but it's more on the yellow side. She also doesn't have any Red/copper patches on her wings, just a few on chest but BCM hens can get that from what I read here. She's almost all black with the blue-greenish sheen. She's on the smaller side too. Shouldn't she have more colors if it was a roo? Help!!

Still definitely a roo...... But I'm questioning it being a purebred BCM. Any chance there was a mistake and he is in fact a Black Marans? Where did you get him from?

Hmm...I just googled black marans and he certainly looks like one. I got him from a local breeder and she only has black copper marans and the white marans in her breeding program (supposedly), but I've been questioning it too b/c there should be some copper on neck by now. I know BCM hens have the big combs...i was hoping she was a fast developer, but I guess pullets aren't supposed to be that big until laying age. Ughh!! Thank u!

I wonder if she maybe had purchased some new hens recently. A hen can lay eggs fertilized by a breeding that happened over 30 days prior.

Not sure how the genetics work on that..... If it is possible to get a solid black chick from a BCM hen bred to a solid black rooster.
