I had a hen that eat too much and her crop felt like a sponge was inside it, i tilt her upside down and gently massage the crop till the grass and grain fell out, was long grass! No way a chicken can do anything with that. This may not be what is going on, too many things going on same time to really know at this time. Wish i knew more here. Her vent is pink and puffy. Her crop doesn’t feel full right now despite the fact that she is eating.
Does Marek’s cause bloating? A spongy abdomen? When I held my hand under her abdomen she seemed able put a little weight on her legs. Not stand by herself, but I thing the weight of the bloat is not allowing her to stand. I think she just started laying recently, smallish sized eggs. Her age coincides with Marek's. Not saying that's what it is though.
Not sure what that swelling would be. Ascites is usually seen in older hens. @casportpony @Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive any ideas?
I have a puppy pee pad under her shavings. Were any of the recent eggs larger than usual? Sometimes eggs will press against the sciatic nerve and cause their getaway sticks (legs) not to work.
Withhold water and food overnight and see if she has pooped and emptied her crop in the morning to rule crop issues out Keep in mind that because she is down, her crop is somewhat compressed.
You may want to see about building her a sling, chicken chair - goes by many names- to help get her upright so we're not adding issues.
Also- give her something with better traction on the floor of her cage, always good to have around in any case. I use 1/4" rubber mat which is sold by the foot at most farm supply stores and is easily cut by a box cutter.
Or, you can turn a "welcome" mat upside down to a rubberized or textured side - that kind of thing.
Not in my personal experience. Does it feel like bloating (air) or fluid?Does Marek’s cause bloating? A spongy abdomen? She still can’t stand although she tries at times. She definitely doesn’t use the left leg. She seems to still be eating. She loves the treats I give her. I scrambled an egg for her today and she gobbled it up. My vet gave me some pain meds for her although she didn’t have a chance to examine her. I just started the meds tonight. She is still panting a lot. Hopefully the medicine will make her feel better. Her poop is grainy looking but in the normal category. Thanks for asking. How is she doing today? Can she stand up, and is she moving either leg? Is she eating and drinking?
