Stingrays

It's kinda like shark bites. Millions of people visit the North Carolina beaches every year, and the enormous majority of them never even see a shark. But this year, we had 8 people that got bitten within about a month; a number that is unprecedented in all the years that records have been kept. Yeah, that's an ocean out there, and it has sharks in it; there is always some possibility that a person could have a nasty encounter with one. What are the actual odds? I don't think anyone really knows. Most years, the sharks aren't a problem; it is far more normal to have no shark bites in a year than to have even one. But if you happened to have been at Oak Island when two people got bitten within a couple of hours, it might be hard to believe that shark bites are a rare event . . . .

Although in the grand scheme of things the odds are low, there are a far number more people stung by stingrays each year...

We can look at this article from April this year, they had 30 reported stings in the month of April on a single beach, since the article was published on the 15 that means about two a day on that beach alone...

It's estimated that there are about 1,500 stingray stings a year in the US, in the grand picture small, but not insignificant...

I live in San Diego, and my brother got stung like a month ago. He barely got any venom though so he wasn't crying or screaming. He didn't even know he got stung.

I'm just scared about getting off my board, cuz i'm afraid i'll step on one when i get off the board. My brother got stung when he was getting of his boogie board and touched the ground. Ya'll are great!

I've got friends in San Diego who have been going in the ocean there for years and none of them have ever been stung by a stingray. Could it happen? Of course, just as you could get hit by a meteor. But neither one is likely to happen, so don't unreasonable fears keep you from enjoying life.)

I thought that sharks don't like human flesh tho. Do they bite peoples limbs off, or just a little chunk?

I've heard it said that, generally speaking, the fat/protein/bone ratio on humans doesn't make us good shark food, so we give 'em indigestion (or worse). Most of the people that get bitten along the beaches get bitten one time, on a foot or hand; the "experts" believe that it's a case of a shark mistaking the extremity for a fish, and then realizing its mistake and releasing. Some of the people bitten this summer lost limbs, and some were bitten several times; clearly, the "grab and '00PS - my mistake!'" didn't apply in every case.

Ya, here in San Diego I think we have bull sharks and great whites. I'm more scared of bull sharks tho since great whites are pretty rare. I saw Soul Surfer like a year ago.

The Great Whites are more common in northern California waters, particularly from Point Reyes out to the Farallon Islands and then down to Monterrey Bay. That particular area is known as "The Red Triangle" because of the large number of Great White attacks that have occurred there over the years.

Hi! We're having a weird shark and sting ray year. Just saw a news report about thousands of stingrays just north of LA. Creepy.

If you're worried, can you wear water shoes? I wouldn't let it ruin your fun. Sting Ray shuffle.
Tons of shark encounters too. Hammerhead bumped a surfer a few days ago at La Jolla, Kayaks getting bitten. Great Whites at Hunnington a few weeks ago bumped a surfer, 12 ft great white ate a bite of surfboard this week at Morro Bay, 20ft great white sited there yesterday. How can surfers still surf without being petrified? I'm just TOO chicken.
