I was cleaning my workshop today when I heard an awful scream coming from the chicken coop area. I ran over to find my dog, Dorie, pinning Ladybug to the ground grabbing mouthfuls of feathers. Surprisingly, other than a few minutes of breathing heavily and some missing feathers, she looked fine and is now back to foraging with the other chickens. That naughty hen always wants what's on the other side of the fence... 😒 It might be time to clip her wings.

Cleaned out the coop today and I am testing out a new bedding. This is pelletized pine bedding. The 6'x10' area took four bags, but I may have to add another. Certainly not the cheapest bedding option.

The chickens were actually scared to step on them at first, I think because of how noisy they are underfoot and the new texture. I'm sure they'll get use to it. I saw one hen taste a pellet then quickly spit it out, so they definitely know it isn't food.

Update on the pellet bedding: I'm afraid they are not for me and my coop. The main problem is when the chickens jump down from the roosts or nesting boxes they slide across the floor and their legs slip out from under them like they landed on marbles. In order to fix this I guess I would have to add a lot more which is expensive and will be too high and interfere with the doors. The pellets also seem hard on their feet and my ducks started eating them after they got wet.

I do think they would work well for a small coop with short or no roosts and doors that are raised well off the floor. But this is not going to work for me, sadly. :(
