A full year! That's what I'm testing. It's $7.29 per 40lb bag here. A bag of shavings is $7.49 and a bale of straw is $9.99. For the pellets to be worth it to me they need to last over year which I don't think is going to happen. We'll see though.

that's... incredible. I will have to look into this. I suppose I've kept straw that long before, but it breaks down and by then I'm ready to burn the place down because all the finery in the air gets me.Yeah! They do last a long time.

My mom picked them out and I don't know exactly why she chose them over the other peppers.![]()
Update on the pellet bedding: I'm afraid they are not for me and my coop. The main problem is when the chickens jump down from the roosts or nesting boxes they slide across the floor and their legs slip out from under them like they landed on marbles. In order to fix this I guess I would have to add a lot more which is expensive and will be too high and interfere with the doors. The pellets also seem hard on their feet and my ducks started eating them after they got wet.Cleaned out the coop today and I am testing out a new bedding. This is pelletized pine bedding. The 6'x10' area took four bags, but I may have to add another. Certainly not the cheapest bedding option.
The chickens were actually scared to step on them at first, I think because of how noisy they are underfoot and the new texture. I'm sure they'll get use to it. I saw one hen taste a pellet then quickly spit it out, so they definitely know it isn't food.
