stinky chicken run

I find that when my coop and run get smelly, it is chick feed getting wet then mixed with shavings and poo that starts to reak. It molds in no time flat too which is bad if they eat any. My 5 and 7 week olds mixed flock are still knocking feed everywhere, but my silkies are too short to reach the feeders up on bricks, so I'll have to put up with it a little longer.

I agree! It's the food that stinks~ my clumpsy nuggets always knock the water over and spill it in with the shavings and the food which in return cause magor odor issues!! So as I build their coop you know I'm making a feeder that lowers from the ceiling so they can't kick it over and walk through it!!

Had a similar conversation just the other day. My daughter said the chicken coop smelled bad. I immediately ran to check. Well, it was the usually "scent". My two boys said it smelled like chickens but did not stink. Wife said it was not bad.

Conclusion, it is the individual sensitivity and level of tolerance. I would classify mine as a farm fresh.

I am new and reluctant to offer advice, but i can't resist sharing a wonderful idea that we found! Chicken nipple watering jugs! We first learned about them at Avian Water Miser website, and we ordered DIY kit (mostly for the drill bit that IS hard to find!) then my husband found more nipples cheap on ebay! There is NO spilling or leaking (if you use the right sized hole/drill bit) of water at all!
The food spilling issue....... no ideas yet! But handy-brilliant husband is working on the white pvc pipe feeders concept!
Good luck! And WHO KNEW... how smelling chicky poo could be? Certainly not ME!

We have had our chicks since 3/31/11 and I have decided that the reason chicken poop smell particularly awful is because of their food...I had a bag of chick crumple get wet in trailer....salvaged most of the bag....however, when I cleaned what had spilled out of my trailer....I thought I was going to gag it smelled so badly! AND I don't have a weak stomach and I LOVE "farm" smell!

In addition, we also have rabbits, 4 cages....2 of which house rabbits that are litter box trained THANK GOD! Then there are two cages that house rabbits with long hair....wire bottom cages and due to their fur, (my daughter used to show them) they don't use litter boxes.....at the moment...(while we finish our coop and run) ALL of them the chickens and the bunnies are on our porch...if the cages don't get cleaned out when they should, I think the bunny cages (the non litter box using ones) smell FAR WORSE than 2 brooder boxes, one with ten 10 1/2 week old chicks and another brooder box with 12 chicks ranging in age from 2 1/2 weeks to 5 weeks old. Moral of the story.....we will NEVER have another long haired bunny again!

Update: Folks who suggested it was the chick feed that was stinky, not the poop, you were correct. We've been more careful about not letting feed spill and the smell went away completely. Thanks for the advice!
