Stinnnnky

This is great advise. I've used this site every step of the way and have always gotten great advise.
I never worry about anything. When my wife of I have a question, I just say " I'll check with eveyone on Back Yard Chickens"
Thanks

I use Stall Dry (not sure if Dry or Dri, must check the bag) and love it. I rake the coops (3 of them) every weekend and sprinkle the bedding with DE and Stall Dry. I leave it for the chickies to mix in. The only time I have a problem with smell is when I forget to scrape the poop boards!

If you have that much ammonia then I will betcha anything you also have that much *humidity* in the coop, which stall powders etc will make a *little* difference but not really solve the problem.

So, I think it would really be worth your while figuring out what the problem is and fixing it, rather than relying on powders as a running band-aid for the situation.

What size are your vents, what size is the coop, how many chickens in it?

Do you use droppings boards, if so how often do you clean them, if not how often do you clean out the deposits of poo that build up below the roost?

Is there any possible source of added moisture -- waterer spills, waterer leaks, rain coming in through openings, leaky roof, leaky walls, floor on damp ground?

Your solution(s) will lie somewhere in the answers to those Qs.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Here is what I know, Stall DRY is some sort of clay, and DE. Stall DRI has other chemicals in it. Not sure what, but not great for chickens to ingest. I read on a post that Stall DRI is safer to use around chickens.

From some of the other Stall Dry / Dri threads (found via the search tab up in the blue bar)

Stall DRI has some kind of chemical in it that isn't so great for chickens. Stall DRY is DE and clay mixed together. A lot of people on BYC seem to love the Stall Dry so if you can get it, go for it!

Thank you so much for answering.

I'm sorry, but I'm still confused. KMHunter said that Stall Dri is not good for chickens, but then also says it's safer for them.

AlicefellDown, I did try the search, and that's what confused me:
Cjeanean writes both "Stall Dry" and "Stall Dri" in her post.
Jarhead only refers to SweetPDZ.
Dustoff79 refers only to "Stall Dry", but doesn't give any information on it.
nuts4chicks also refers to "Stall Dry" alone.

In my search results, people were saying "Stall Dry" is good and is bad and "Stall Dry" is good and is bad. Perhaps you guys don't notice it because you already know what you're talking about. You're smart enough to understand automatically. I think I'm getting lost because I don't know anything about chickens. This board is teaching me. I would be grateful if someone would explain to a clueless newbie. I'm sorry to be a pest.

Yes, I see what you mean, people get the spelling mixed up all the time. I went to double check the spelling on the product that I use--it is Stall Dry and it has a picture of a chicken on the front, along with other animals. This is the one with clay and DE in it. Cannot comment on Dri Stall or Stall Dri, but Stall Dry is perfectly safe and recommended for chicken coops.

I think that's part of the problem, no one can confirm the spelling, and nothing I could find on google was 'good'.

I'd say check your local stores and read the ingredient labels - you want the one that is DE and Clay, like nuts4chicks wrote.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I've never seen either bag in any of my local stores.
