Ive had my chickens for about 3-4 months now. Got them around 12 weeks old. Just before they started laying I noticed this odd behaviour. If I go up to pat them they poke out there shoulders and stomp there feet on the ground but dont move from the spot. At first only one of them did it (the more shy one) but then the other more friendly one started.
Is it to do with defence, them saying "dont touch me"? Although its not a very good defence as they simple stay in the same spot and then im able to pick them up.

When they do this I usually just pat them on there back and tell them to stop being silly (lol) as it suits them when I touch them because they jump up onto my lap all the time.

Just wondering if anyone out there knows a reason why my chickens do this funny thing.

Cheers, Jennifer

that sounds like what they do for the rooster :) they're being submissive. I usually just pet them when they do that :)

I think that is the behavior they have with roosters.
