I noticed one of my hen with a red ball like thing coming out it's behind. I looked it up and they're calling it prolapse so I took some Vaseline and was able to push it back in so far so good. Will I have a reoccurrence and is it OK to continue pushing it back in.She seems to be OK so far. what causes this i'm next to positive she was able to lay in egg today. Thank you for your time.

What they usually recommend is put the hen up in a dark place so she'll stop laying and keep pushing it back in until it stays in. This can take days, weeks even. Was this her first egg, or one of the first?
If she laid an egg tho, and the prolapse didn't return, she may be okay.

I agree. My chicken has had a prolapsed vent before, and it was pretty bad, but she made a full recovery. Today, however, we discovered it again, and MUCH worse. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions on recovery methods.

I do appreciate your reply I will keep an ion her and no she has laid for the last four months this just started happening hopefully it won't happen again we will keep an ion her again thank you.

My hen is still going through prolapse I have been giving her preparation H for the swelling. This has been going on for about four days every morning I have to push it back in for it seems to be working. My question is how often should I use preparation H or should I stop it seems to only be trying to come out of her in the morning. If you have some answers I would really appreciate it thank you.

Since you are able to push the prolapse back inside easily, you can probably stop the PrepH. However, the red tissue, when it comes out, needs to be pushed back or kept moist with honey or an oil of some kind, such as triple antibiotic, olive oil, or vaseline to keep it from drying out, and turning black and die. I am glad she is passing dropping okay.

Sometimes a farm or dog vet can put a small stitch or suture to hold the prolapse in until it heals. Other animals such as pigs, goats, and cows also can have prolapse, so a large animal vet probably has some experience with that.

How long do you think I should keep her in darkness as in days or hours. I have her in a small pan in the garage right now and it is dark. Just a little confused on how long in the darkness. If you could let me know that would be great thank you.

What I have read is to keep them in the dark overnight for at least 16 hours a day, then let them in daylight for the remaining 8 hours a day to eat and walk around. It takes about 3 days or so.

First of all I want to say thank you for your help. I went out there this morning and no prolapse which is great. She is still in darkness i'll let her go like you said around 16 hours let her out with the flock and let her eat she is going poop OK which is another good thing LOL. Then I will put her back in darkness and do it over again . Again I want to say thank you for your help if you happen to come up with other ideas feel free to let me know you don't get a whole lot of information on prolapse. So we just do what we can do right. Have a great day again thank you.
