Store Chickens

This is good PR for your business, and I would make it a point to keep a few calm-natured Buff Orpintons, Barred Rocks, or whatever in the store. Also, stock up on a bunch of those chicken books out there, even those dummies guides to raising chickens and a few issues of Backyard Poultry. You may not be selling chickens directly, but with supplying your customers with a wealth of publications, feed supplies and a listing of hatcheries, you may get overwhelmed with inquiries and purchases. Businesses like you can really promote this chicken craze, and I applaud you for what you're doing now.

I grew up in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and lived about three miles out from the city. We never did get chickens again after the new house was built back in 1965 on maybe a rural 2-acre lot, and I miss them. We had a 70-acre farm out in the boonies before we moved to the new house, and had a big chicken coup, divided into two rooms. The first room had many roosts and feeding troughs, while the second room had about 10-15 nest boxes and maybe several smaller roosts in there. I can remember my dad coming home late one night in the old late 50's/early 60's Pontiac with a trunk full of chickens. Their legs were all tied, so they couldn't move around very much, and gently untied them and put them in the coop. There must have been two or three dozen of them.

I've been in Tucson, Arizona since 1990, and would like to get back to some of my roots having chickens again even though I live in a concrete jungle with an HOA where, supposedly a reasonable number is allowed, although the City says you can have 24 hens. --BB
