Hey all, I could use some advice. I picked up 20 Cornish Rock chicks at our local TSC the other day since I wanted to get another batch in before winter, and I had some interest from a customer who buys eggs from us as well as some friends. I checked everywhere else, but all the hatchery ship dates wouldn’t work out, so I decided to take a chance on these. I was told they were 2 weeks old, but if they are, they’re way underweight/size according to the chart I have for them. I also picked up a couple of cute Australorps (supposedly) who were in the same bin with them. This isn’t my first rodeo, but they just seem like they all ought to be bigger if they’re truly 2 weeks old as they say. Weighed yesterday and the largest Cornish Rock was 6oz. Could these be a slower growing type? Pics attached. Thanks!

At 1 week my cornish avg weight was 4.4 oz. I would guess they probably just got a slow start from travelling and then competing in the probably crowded TSC brooder. It is hard to be definitive when they are so young and yu have had them for such a short time.

Hard to say for sure, but they don't look like any slow-growing variety I am aware of. They probably are Cornish Cross - I would guess they are about 10 days old based on feathering and size. If they are actually a full 2 weeks old, yes they are a little behind. It could be due to a number of factors including cheap feed, stress, overcrowding, periods without sufficient feed/water (I've seen them run dry at TSC before), etc.

I would watch their growth, but I wouldn't worry if they look healthy overall.
