Stores Caught Dumping Items That Could Be Given To Charity.

Varies CONSIDERABLY by location.

Show me one case where someone was charged an convicted? All they can charge you with is tresspassing an they have to prove you ether passed a no trespassing sign, climbed a fence or had been asked to leave the property allready.

I'll let a professional dumpster diver answer that - http://www.ranprieur.com/misc/dumpster.html

Don't confuse 'cops can't be bothered to do anything about it' with 'legal'.

So, as I stated, the legality of dumpster diving varies considerably by location.

If you wish more information, try this link

In quite a few towns, mine included, the practice is specifically banned.

The sad fact is..people are sue happy today..
if a restaurant donates food to a shelter and people get sick...
yeah..guess who gets the blame? crappy..but true..
The old saying.."No good deed goes unpunished" is very true nowdays..

Ok i will put my two cents in this thread since I took the time to read the entire thing. First the main reason big box stores aka walmart, target, lowe's, and home depot throw away stuff is they get credit from company or the company that bought out that company hope that made sense if you resell something that isnt yours it is considered stealing. I will explain this lets say ralph owns a gas grill company and lets say sam bought them out and dont want their name out there anymore they will give credit to field destroy and if you dont do that and try to sell it or give it away that is stealing in thier eyes. Because they say whom ever ended up with that "ralph" grill will now not buy my "sam" grill hope that makes sense. 2nd reason is People see big box stores and see money from sueing them for any possible thing they can whether it is a scratch from dumpster diving or i found this and it infected me somehow. 3rd most of these companys donate alot of money to charities that do not turn a profit like boy scouts, girl scouts and united way if they dont give money they let them sell cookies or what ever from their store. 4th is well you let so and so charity have this much food or clothes and you only gave me this much now i am going to print discrimination. Some people ruin everything for everyone else because of greed or laziness.

Um...it doesn't need to be against state or federal law to be illegal, and I never suggested otherwise. I showed you the links to the actual laws that make it actually illegal in actual areas. I don't need to do any more than that to prove my point. Please follow the last link I provide, it goes to plenty more information on the subject. I've proven my statement far beyond a reasonable doubt. If you still have questions, go dumpster diving in one of the areas that has passed laws against it and I'm sure the cops will be happy to explain the matter to you in as much detail as you request.

The store I work at, any damaged good is returned to the vendor. The store gets credit for those items. Upsets some customers because we can't deep discount something that is damaged. Any returned or expired food item must be destroyed. It's hard to see some things go to waste (sometimes it is large amounts), but violating the policy is immediate termination. But if it is pulled it is for a reason and shouldn't be consumed. If it is a return, it has been opened and you don't know that it is safe.

Some discontinued, close to expiration or something that doesn't sell does get donated to the local animal shelter. We receive lists of things to pull and donate. The bar codes must be removed before donation or before destroying any item and sent to corporate. Everything is accounted for.

I shop a LOT at the thrift stores in my community, some are commercial & others charity-run. There seems to be NO LACK of clothing available in any of them. In fact, many of the larger more popular thrift stores themselves throw away a quantity of donated clothing that doesn't meet their criteria for sale, or they bundle it up to sell as rags. In addition, there are a number of charities that supply clothes for little or no cost to anyone in need.

So I don't think that because a large retail chain is throwing away some of its clothing instead of donating them to charity then some folks will have to walk around town wearing old newspapers to cover their nakedness.

As others have said already, instead of criticizing anyone for not doing enough to care for those in need, look to your own resources and see if you yourself are doing everything you can do to help others.

This is why this country is in the shape its in. Think about the stuff they throw away, put it on a rack and charge a $1. I would be the first one there!! K-Mart is pretty good about putting their kids stuff cheap cheap cheap and selling what they can. What they do with it after that, I don't know . . .I hate WM. Sam has to be rolling in his grave because of what his kids did to his dream.

Often it's been on the sale rack with a $1 price tag on it prior to being tossed.

Let's face it. There is clothing out there that even a desperate homeless person wouldn't wear.
