Storing Fresh Eggs for up to 2 years...

The egg is sterile inside so it would be safe to eat providing it remained sterile inside... but may not have the same texture. I have a few eggs that are probably 8 years old now that just plain dried up. The nutritional value probably isn't the same, but it probably won't kill you to eat it.

It won't hatch because by then, too much maternal mRNA and even DNA damage would have occurred for proper initiation of development. It may be bacteria free, but enzymes are still in there doing their "work".
 
Considering "farm fresh" store bought eggs can be up to 6 months old and stored in just a fridge, I believe 2 years would be ok. I guess in an emergency it would be fine. I'm not sure I would want to do that for every day use though!

The folk in villages on the north slope (and other places) used a similar method with seal oil. You just have to do it right. I think I'd rather have seal oil than vaseline. That's a petroleum product.
