Story behind Where the Wild Things Are

I took my kids to see it. I don't think it was worth all the hype. I loved the book as a child and I still do. I read it to my kids starting with my oldest 22+ years ago. The movie did not do justice to simplicity of the book. It did not teach consequence for actions. The mother was a passive authority. The child was much older than the child of the book. It was an attempt at an artsy art house art film artfully produced by an obscure artist. It wasn't made for children. It was made by someone who perhaps saw himself in the boy represented in the movie not the book. The test audience for the movie gave it failing reviews and they were right. It was like watching an old 1980's VHS tape of a movie that had given the expectation of what digital DVD's did for the Xmen Wolverine movie.

My review again?

It was an attempt at an artsy art house art film artfully produced by an obscure artist.

Grade: Fail.

It was not the book of my childhood which I loved so very much.

My 3 year old sons review of the movie?

"That was a bad little boy. I did not like him. I like when he was in her mouth. She should swallow him that bad boy."

I spent my money to help make someone else richer. Something I rarely do. I don't buy cd's and rarely go to movies as they are disappointing and never meet my expectations.

Society too often accepts mediocrity as a form of 'art". Too often we buy into it. Literally.

Spoiler Alert:

Also it was not true to the book. In the ways that matter. In the movie the boy actually ran away. Considering how it ended the mother did not search for him either.

Nope. I saw BTT at the one in Lville. I use to go to that one as a child and my SO was working down the street from there when this movie was out so I stopped in for old times sake.
Now I just go to the one in Athens cause its closer.

WOW.... I am soooo disappointed with these reviews. My mother read this book to me as a kid,, it was our favorite. I was planning on taking my 4 year old to see it and I guess I will have to rethink that. It seems that now they almost make the kid movies for the adults more than the kids, I mean yeah the kids like them too but it's a little crazy to me, they weren't made like that when I was a kid. Take Shrek for example, great movie- But TONS of inuendo and even several "bad words", as my 4 year old ALWAYS points out. Like I said, I liked the movie, but it was like it was almost FOR the parents. There was a ton of "hidden" jokes and such that the kids would not appreciate. I just don't get it.

Here is an interesting article from Newsweek. The author of Where The Wild Things is interviewed. It is fascinating, although it sounds rude when he says that parents who find his movie too scary can go to h@ll. I think that question could have been answered differently.

I went to see it on saturday. I brought my 6, 4 and 2 year old. My 2 year old was scared when the monsters were yelling, my 4 year old 'Loved it, cause my favorite part was the monsters. and the boy was running away from his home, and when he did crazy stuff like stand on top of the table." Her least favorite part was "the scary parts, like all the fire." So if I were recommending it, which I DO, I think probably for kids 4 and up... I thought it was beautifully done, and the music was amazing, and I'm going to buy the sdtk, and I really, really thought it was like a beautiful dream that maybe changed us all a little. But yeah, the cake part? I was like "If you run away, and don't come home for like a month, do you think I'm giving you cake?!" and my kids were like "no." so, as long as that's clear.

I wanted to go see it due to the preview shown on TV. Now you guys have seen it, it made me rethink it because I would hate to throw good money away for that reason if it was not so good.

I enjoyed that book when I was younger and when it was first out, alot of kids loved it.

Even though it's not a happy funny childrens film- it was good. The scenery and characters were exceptionally done. In the NPR interview with the producer- he talked about how it was "his interpretation" of the book.

If you liked Nightmare Before Christmas and stuff like that, I think you'll like this.
