straight run, really? rant...

I don't know what my percentage was on my hatchery ordered Silkies, but all the ones I kept ended up being all girls. I sold the rest when they were 3 months, so I can't really say. But I feel sorry for you and would be pretty d*** p***** too with all of the Roos.

my straight run order has 3 pullets, 1 pat, and 14 cockerals . yeah, the odds of that happening "naturally" ?

It can happen and I have it happen all the time here in my own hatches. I hatched around 37 BLRWs from my own eggs last fall and out of those chicks I got 3 or 4 pullets. This spring out of the SLW eggs (my own) I've hatched I've got 2 pullets to show for it. I have hatched many more cockerals than pullets out of all my breeds this spring/summer. It can and does happen unfortunately.

Straight run means you're willing to take your chances on what sex you get....if you want all pullets buy sexed birds.

I order 6 sr BLRW from McMurray, 2 pullets, 4 Roos, I think that is right on target. 8 Ameracuna chicks from breeder, think I have 4 pullets, 4 Roos. Only 10 weeks, so may possibly have one more roo, one less pullet. Either way, I feel my straight run numbers are pretty lucky for me. The BLRW from McMurrays ONLY comes sr, so maybe you are more likely to get exactly that.

And heck, in my family, I am one of 4 children. 3 Roos, one pullet- guess sometimes it just ain't 50/50

In regards to TSC, getting mainly roos, be advised that a LOT of customers go in and sex the straight runs and take their pick. If you get there a day or two after the chicks arrive, your chances or getting TRULY straight run increase dramatically.

The TSC around here only get pullets but you are limited to RIR's and PR's I believe. The bantems and ducks are all straight run and you must purchase a min. of 5.

i usually order straight run in hopes of getting extra freezer roos.. this year i have been getting mostly pullets.. for instance I ordered one batch of 25 straight run chicks (mix of wyandottes and orps).. only got 5 roos in the entire batch...
I just looked at my bantams (23 chicks).. and so far I am only seeing 2 roos...
