What does "Straight Run" mean exactly?

DO NOT ORDER ST. RUN unless you want a bunch of roosters!!!
Siz is correct... it is a mix of both roos and hens...
for example here is what I ordered because I didnt know the difference... and when I found out... well.. too late.
5 st run Barred rocks - I ended up with 2 roosters
5 st run RIR's (they sent me 6) - I ended up with 4 roosters and 2 hens
5 st run Light brahmas - I ended up with 2 roosters
5 Golden Laced polish (got 6) ended up with 3 roosters
5 Silver Laced polish - I ended up with 3 roosters...

I think you get my point... and out of the orders where I ordered pullets only... I got at lease 1 rooster out of those if I ordered 10 or more. Needless to say.. I have TO MANY ROOSTERS!!!!!

What st run means is that they just grab them as they hatch and put them in a box... they do not sex them.

And your welcome! Just order pullets only from now on and you might end up with one or two roosters...

No hatchery claims anything over 90% accuracy. I've even had roosters show up with sex linked breeds. If you are looking for laying birds, do pay the extra cents to get hens. You will undoubtedly get a rooster anyhow. Unless, of course, you really need a rooster for breeding in which case they'll sex them right.

Straight runs are what you typically order for meat birds. Also some of the more rare breeds of chicken (and waterfowl) you won't find sexed even as an option. They are a straight run only because they're more in demand, which means "as hatched".

Most places also don't sex their bantams. I personally like straight run. I can eat the left overs.

I must be really lucky!!!

I went to my local hatchery, ask for a straight run of 25. I asked for 10 RIR's, 10 Black sexlinks, and 5 of any other breed they had that laid brown eggs. I received 26 in total. 10 RIR, 10 black sexlinks, 5 silver laced Wyandotte, and one I to this day dont what breed it is. All 26 were pullets/hens and all 26 are still alive to this day 16 months later. It must be the luck of the Irish!
