i have a six week old black austrolorpe chick that is acting weird. i recently let it loose in the coop with the other chickens, they have a place to get away from big chickens, and food and water access away from big chickens, all the other chickens are perfectly fine.

a couple of days ago it had an altercation with my rooster, the rooster got ahold of it and shook it by the back of the head, only a few feathers were lost, no blood. since then it will be walking around normal and then either a chicken or a person will go by it and it will put its head down between its feet and start shaking, and walking backwards until it gets in a corner and then it will just sit there and shake with its head between its legs, if left alone it will eventually stop and start acting normal although it head is usually lower in position than normal, it can however put its head back around under its wing like normal to sleep. it is eating and drinking. and pooping normal, if you pick it upit tucks its head under its body and between its legs, even if you put it on its back,

i brought it in the house into a dog kenel to watch, it seems to act normal until it notices a human or other animal, is it got some kind of brain injury or is it just reall freaked out and trying to hide and act submissive? please help

Sounds like it's just pretty freaked out by that experience, and maybe trying to protect its head by hiding it under its body? I'm not sure, I'm no expert at these situations. :/ We had a bird who was being pecked pretty bad though, and who would go crazy every time someone advanced towards her.

I hope someone with a bit more experience can help you out. Hope it improves too. :hugs

I have a 4wk old austrolorp that just started acting very similar. I doesn't do it all the time but what I noticed first was that it was hanging it's head lower that the others and was more skittish and it will occasionally tuck it's head to it's chest and run in reverse until it meets an obstacle. Almost like some kind of wiring problem in the brain. Otherwise it it eating and growing as fast as the other chicks.
