A young hen that was hatched this summer began a strange behavior when she approached adult hood.
She would periodically lower her head, almost dragging her beak, without touching the floor with it, walk backwards a few steps. She sometimes does this 3 or 4 times in a row.

A couple months later, a young rooster, also hatched this summer began doing the same thing, except he actually drags his beak across the floor.

There is nothing on their beaks.

any suggestions?

I have a roo that does this too. He’s completely healthy and agile. It’s as if he’s trying to clean his beak. He has a twin brother that has never done this. I think it’s just something he discovered. I haven’t found anything to explain it because walking backward explanations tend to revolve around Newcastle Disease but he doesn’t fit that description. I know this doesn’t help but it doesn’t appear to be that odd either.
