Strange behavior from my chicken...

One of my chickens went into her nesting box in her coop for about an hour and then came back out again without laying an egg... Could this be an indication of something? It seems rather odd to me.

Perhaps you have too much time on your hands? Chickens visit the nest boxes for several reasons: To check 'em out - is this a good place to lay eggs? To have some quiet time, not picked on by any other chicken (or the rooster). To practice nesting behavior; "I'm gonna be a big girl soon, let's see how I fit in here, and am I ready to lay my egg yet? Ooooh, this pine shaving is the perfect one to put on my back. I'm all ready now..... Okay, I'm bored, I'm gonna go outside now and look for bugs."

Wait until you find your rooster in a nest box..... if you have a rooster.

They ALSO check 'em out and even encourage pullets and hens to use 'em!
