Hi, I just got my first hatchling today, there are more eggs pipping and chirping. The new chick responds to each pipping chick rapidly. Right now it is sitting on top of one of the pipped chicks. Is it safe for the unhatched chick? Is this normal behavior?

Hi Sue!
Yes, this is quite expected. Her chirping will actually encourage the others to come out and join her! I have been told that a broody mama may peck a bit at an egg due to hatch, to encourage it. I don't know that personally, as I have never yet had a broody.
Good luck, and have fun!

I have only hatched out one batch of chicks but mine were always climbing on the other eggs and were especially interested in eggs that had pipped and were peeping.
