Hi all,
i have to do an introduction.
Since i found the first lices on my chickens, about 4 years ago, i have always used Diatomaceus Earth to kill them. I know that the use of DE is discussed, but, in my specific situation I always found it resolved. Even with massive infestation! I always have this type of lices on my chickens, and when i see them i powder the birds with DE and then they disappear in a few days.

poultry louse

BUT!
Some days ago, during my weekly inspection on birds, i found on my silkie Batì 8-9 louses that are similar to the one in the picture above but longer (their lenght is double) and black. They are big and they seem louses, not the little little bugs that are very common in wood coops. They was pretty only on her head, i looked on all her body but i haven't seen others.

So, i putted DE on her, but i'm not seeing improvements. The number of bugs is slowly increasing.
Batì is molting now but she doesn't seem weak at all, she is happy as usual even if she is a bit bullied from the boss of the flock (but this is beacuse she was broody and i broke her, so she is reintegrating in the flock). For sure, today i fed her alone so i was sure she ate enough. Her comb is OK.
I gave her today 1/2 egg to boost a bit energy and iron, and yesterday i gave her some nettle.

Have you ever fighted this type of louse? How?
What could i do? thank you so much!!!

p.s i will try to do some pictures tomorrow ;)

Hi @sourland ! Finally i'm able to catch a picture! they're very able to quickly hide in the feathers!:mad::mad::mad:

This is an adult. Babies are smaller and their color is light orange.
It doesn't seem a flea... ?

Maybe you could ask in the thread ‘peeps in Europe ’ . We have other lice /parasite problems in EU as in the US.

I use DE too, but mostly against bird mite and feather lice. Works great for me too so far.

I haven’t seen this bug before. Maybe @Shadrach, can tell you more, he lives in Spain.

I would say it's some type of louse, but I couldn't tell anything more than that.
If they are infesting her head and the DE is ineffective, then I would get a louse powder or spray and see if that will get rid of them.
You are in the UK so see if you can find Battles Louse Powder or similar Permethrin based poultry product.

So i'm trying to understand if it's safe to put permethrine on the birds..

But i have another doubt:
Little introduction: in my flock there is a kind of respiratory disease that comes out when birds get very wet. The silkie mostly shows this relation.

So i can't decide what is better between liquid spray and powder, even because i know that inhaling powders like DE and Permethrin powder can be dangerous for their respiratory system, so i could make a respiratory-mess even with powder..😬
I read that avoiding powder going on birds' face and nose would be better, but what if the more infested area is her head?
What amount of liquid spray is needed, in your opinion? Would i need to get her very wet? 🤔

thank you very very much for the help 😊

Today I noticed these orrible bugs even on my 8yy old Isa Brown (she is fine and happy)...so i'm more worried! 😨😨

i searched it and found on this site
https://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Poultry_Louse_Red_Mite_Powders.html

But here it says:

"DO NOT APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE BIRDS OR ANIMALS, ONLY USE IN THEIR HOUSING."

And my strange lices are only on the birds not in the house..

🤷‍♀️ I see that...right above it is Battles Red Mite Powder which says that it can be applied to the birds. So...maybe one for the birds, one for the housing?!
You'll have to do a bit of research on products!
