When lumps pop up like that, sometimes I will say wait a couple days and see what happens because sometimes it could just be due to bumping into something. Sometimes, it could even be due to an insect bite. The problem with waiting a few days though is if it is not just a bump or inflammation from a bite, then a quick growing lump could turn out to be something invasive, and waiting could cause more issues.

Without an exam in person, it is really difficult to say whether or not the lump should be aspirated or biopsied, or if it is not a concern at all. I would suggest looking carefully on and around the bump for any cuts which could have caused an infection. However, with a large breed dog, I would definitely recommend taking her in to a vet for them to decide whether it is a concern or not. At the very least, it will put your mind at ease about the lump.

Hey,

I just saw your post about the lump on your dog's head that you posted in January & was wondering what you ended up finding out about it and if your dog is ok?
The exact same thing just happened to my Rottie - almost overnight a strange boney bump appeared on the back of one side of his head...
Fortunately, it doesn't seem to hurt him but I'm worried about what it could be.

Thanks!!!

My 18 month old male pit bull just got one of these same hard, bone like bump on the back top of his head. Seemed to appear overnight as I would have noticed before! It doesn't hurt him at all. I can touch it and he's not bothered by it. It's been a few days now and it's not going down. Any new info on this??

my oldest pitbull has a lump like the one in shannonlovepitts picture, She got hit in the head and a piece of her skull chipped off and a deposit formed around it, The vet says Its common to see pop up randomly weeks or months after a head trauma

My Boston Terrier has that same type of lump! After doing some research here is what I think it is......

Calvarial hyperostotic syndrome

This is similar to CMO

As for treatment.....there doesn't really seem to be any. They say that anti-inflammatory treatment could be helpful.

They could not drain it at all since it really does seem to be bone. They did x-rays and a radiologist suggested a rare form of bone cancer. So far it's been 6 months and it is slightly bigger (about golf ball size) but not too much discomfort and he seems to be acting normal.

Since this is rare....there really isn't much info out there.

I'd love to hear if anyone's dogs have gotten better. We love our little buddy.

You can kinda see it above his right eye

That last bit of information is helpful looks like what my pups looked like at the start but it does seem to be getting bit better as her head keeps growing i washoping maybe she had just bumped out her growth plate and maybe it was going back into place after time as her head grows but i have just left it the antibiotics didn't even do a thing ,

Brooke I am going through the same thing with my dutch shepherd. His bumb first appeared very small that I didn't even notice it till Aug 21st, 14 days later. I only knew when it started cause I take lots of pics of my dogs and going back and looking that's when I first saw it. So it was the size of a half dollar when we took him to the vet and had lab work done. Lab test came back no infection, a couple of a typical cells which vet said was ok. He drained it and lump went flat but then filled right back up. Vet said maybe hematoma and said biopsy would be next step. After researching we decided to see if it would go down on its own and on Sept 11th the bump dispersed and then a couple days later it formed again and not only in between his eyes but on top of his head now. We've gone to 3 different vets and no answers. I have an appointment at Purdue on Oct 7th which just to walk in is $176 plus they quoted me $1800-$2000 to do all kinds of work on him. We are going in hopes it's nothing major. Please see attached pics.
