Strange breathing and unusual noises?

I have a 7-month-old Rhode Island Red pullet who has me worried. Today I watched her and the flock, then noticed that she was walking around with her beak open and wings lifted from her body. I thought she was just thirsty and hot because it's sunny and 80 degrees, but she didn't want to drink water. When she finally took a few sips, I noticed that she was breathing through her still-open beak and making wet croaking sounds. This can't be good, but I can't figure out what could be wrong! She usually only acts like this between late morning and early evening, and still lays eggs, so I'm confused.

How's your pullet doing? It sounds like she may be hot...especially since she displays the symptoms during the hottest part of the day. If you haven't already, try offering electrolytes - you can even make a homemade electrolyte solution.

It does sound like she’s over-heated and it’s causing respiratory distress. Cooling her off is the best way to go.
