Strange calcium deposit on egg shell

We have Ameracana's about a year old and recently have noticed that one or two of the hens have been laying eggs with calcium bumps on the shell. Is this normal? Could it be diet related? Or something else?

sometimes the deposit will brush off with the rub of a finger and other times it is stuck to the shell hard.

I just read about your ameracanna laying rough spots on the shells. I went to our feed store and she said it was too much calcium. I did cut back, but yesterday she laid an egg that was very soft, like a water balloon. Today the egg was fine, but with a soft spot on the pointed side of the egg.

I think she needs more calcium now. Would rather have rough deposits than too soft a shell.

Any other suggestions?

I'm having a similar issue with just 1 of 12 hens, she lays eggs with brittle shell that have calcium lumps on the top. The other 12 are laying fine eggs. The hen in question is an easter egger.

Hi! Did you figure out the cause of this? You perfectly described what one of my hens is doing too.

I wonder if it is breed specific? I have an ameraucana/easter egger who not only laid her first egg at roughly 45 weeks...in the dead of winter, but her eggs are doing the same thing. She is just a year old. Her hatchmate/sister/bff lays beautiful eggs. Wacky birds.

I have one who is doing this... just started this week. Mine are Black Australorps. Between the 6 hens they are laying 4-6 eggs per day in winter. I am blown away!
