We got a new hen and she started laying yesterday. First egg was olive green and today it was kind of lavender. Does what they eat have anything to do with the color of the egg. She is a pretty brown chicken with not much of a comb and a stand upish tail. I have no idea what she is. Any ideas?

I thought that if they laid a green egg they would always lay a green egg. Same with blue or lavender. Can they really change colors like that? I have 9 EEs that havent yet laid and im real excited to see who lays what color eggs, but if they change colors then i will never know.

If she's just starting to lay, she might be still trying to work out the inner mechanics of all this -- specifically how to work the airbrush

I'm being glib, but it wouldn't surprise me if the lighter of those two eggs was missing a color coating.

Does she have grey legs like an EEgger? She sounds like an EE cross. Can you post pics of the egg??? Would love to see a lavender egg. In fact, someone on this forum was looking for a hen who would lay lavender eggs.

edited to say, my EE lay the same shade all the time but there was a time when she would lay all shades from green to blue. Now she is back to light green.
