Hi all! I am looking for some insight regarding an egg my 5 year old Cayuga duck just laid. I noticed she was acting a little lethargic when I went to let the birds out of the run and into the yard, but I felt like she may be working on laying an egg. I watched her for a while and nothing. I began to worry a little so I stayed out with her for a bit and sure enough out pops this strange-looking creature of an egg. It has a soft shell, but has what looks to be a cord or something similar coming from one end. She was acting fine once she laid her egg so I am not terribly worried about her at the moment, but I would like some insight in case this is something I can prevent from happening again.

It looks like it might somehow have a lash egg attached to it. Did she lay yesterday?

Looks like something's upset her egg factory. What do you feed her? Any additional calcium.

No she did not lay yesterday (that I have found....it's almost like an Easter egg hunt for the duck eggs on a regular basis). My ducks have been very slow to lay so far this year, which I suspect is due to older age.

She forages daily but also has access to layer pellets and crushed oyster shell for calcium supplement.

Thats really nothing to worry about unless she lays them continuously. It's a shelled yolk and another shell then passed too the egg machine is slow...

Considering her age strange eggs weren't terribly unexpected, but this was definitely different than what I had ever seen. She is up and moving but doesn't seem to love moving around so I am worried she still has something going on.

She does not let me put my hands on her without a fuss so I am avoiding the extra stress at the moment. If needed I can push antibiotics if nothing else helps.

I had similar experiences last year when my young ducks were introduced to my little cousins (elementary-aged) for the first time. It did not go well, and they were very stressed about the whole situation. The next day I found 2 eggs very similar to your egg, and I attributed it to the stress. I haven't had any more since then, but I have also taken more measures to ensure my ducks feel safe and secure.

BTW, this a soft shell egg not a lash egg for future references.

Can someone tell me what the heck this is??

This was laid by one of my ducks. I found it just like this in their coop this morning. The membrane (or whatever) came off easily and the egg is hard and looks completely normal. Never saw anything like this before! We have no male ducks, only females.
