Hello chicken friends,
One of my 12mth old Orpington hens started laying soft shell eggs after the death of her best mate. Before this, her eggs were perfect. We added shell grit and calcium to the water and nothing changed. After 3 weeks of soft shell eggs she is now not laying at all. She doesn’t even do the egg song anymore. She is happy, eating, and shows no sign of being unwell. Should I be worried?

Are you located in the Northern hemisphere?
If so, she may be molting and taking an annual break from laying. That will help her reset her plumbing. Be careful no to add too much calcium to the diet, especially in the water or mixed with feed where they have no choice but to consume. Excess calcium can be just as bad as not enough. There needs to be an appropriate ratio of Ca to P and D3.
All things in moderation.
