One of my hens laid this soft shell egg, but it's the rest of what's in the photo that worries me -- what looks like the start to an outer shell. That shriveled up thing has some little pieces of shell on it. The blood worries me most. Could there be shell pieces/the rest of that outer layer still in the hen? Has anyone seen anything like this?

Yes I have. I think that is fairly common. I would not worry about it. They seem to iron that out pretty fast.

I usually see it when the pullets first start to lay. I have seen the "same thing" from several girls when they first started laying. I have also sen that outer shell not developed like your photo laid by one of my older sex links.

Wish ya the best.

Ditto the previous reply. I have a welsummer that laid several of these in her first year, including an egg with a shell inside one without a shell. That was freaky. She's fine now, and a regular layer with no problems. Here's that egg, compared with a regular egg from one of my other hens.
Best of luck. It's a fun and freaky journey!
