Hi!

Our newest addition to our homestead is a cute and cuddly kitten! She is so sweet and friendly however, she has a strange goo coming from here eyes. Any idea what this is? Should I contact a vet for help? Does she need special eye drops?

Here is a picture of her eyes.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

It's can be the manifestation of a serious respiratory infection. She definitely needs to go to the vet to rule this in and start treatment or rule it out and worry less. If it is a respiratory infection it could cause blindness or be fatal.

She's very very cute!
Thank you!

We will schedule a vet appointment soon. She is acting fine however, her breathing is a little off but most of the time she is OK. I think you are definitely right about the respiratory infection.

She is purring and sleeping by my windowsill near me. She is purring all the time. Is this bad? I know purring is a good thing but could this be a sign of a respiratory issue?

Thank you!

Possibly cat flu?

A tell tale sign of cat flu is the eyes being covered in goo.

How is she acting other than that?

If it's cat flu they can begin to become lethargic and withdrawn.

Regardless, I would take her to a vet as it's contagious and can be very serious for kittens. The goo that you see can cause blindness and secondary infections.

If it's caught early there is more chance of it being treated and a better outcome for your little kitten.

Until she's seen by a vet I'd suggest gently soaking the eyes with a damp cloth or soft tissue to wipe away the goo. Just always make sure to keep things around her disinfected and keep her seperate from other animals (particularly others cats).

Hope she makes a good recovery! She's lovely.

Hi!

Thank you so much! Definitely going to call a vet. She is still very sweet and playful and is not acting lethargic thankfully. I meant to add in an earlier post that when a woke up at 1:47 this morning (thanks to wild bullfrogs and her meowing) one of her eyes was closed shut as it was covered in the hardened goo. I wiped it off so she was able to use both of her eyes. I will definitely try to wipe it off with a damp cloth or tissue.

Thank you!

Hi!

Update on her health: She/he has been acting fine and is actually grooming herself right now. We estimate her age at about 5-6 weeks old. She is healthy and is eating and using her litter box just fine. She spends lots of time sleeping on my other family members and me when I am available. We wiped the gunk from her eyes however, the gunk slowly started to build up again within a few hours, and we continue to wipe it with a damp cloth. She has not coughed, sneezed, and has not shown any signs of respiratory damage. It seem like she has an eye infection (Conjunctivitis).

Thank you all for your help! Hopefully, I can contact a vet soon. She has two feral siblings that we assume will have the same infection, and we are hoping to capture them and take them to the vet at the same time, unless we are unable to capture them in a couple of days. We do not want to wait too long to get her medical help. As for now, she is very friendly and cries for attention.(and She gets LOTS of it! :D)

Thank you!

It's nice to read the update!

Good that your cleaning her eyes too, it is always best to keep as little goo on there as possible.

I hope she does well!

Hi!

Thank you! She (Confirmed She) is doing much better this morning. We found out that she is about six weeks old. She does not have as much goo around her eyes this morning and is doing much better. We ordered some eye drops for her just in case however, the eye drops are not arriving until Monday June 3rd. Thank you so much for all of your help! She is very playful and interactive now thanks to the help everyone has offered. Thanks again!
