Strange how things popup.

One time I went on Ebay and I forgot I was using my VPN (Virtual Private Network), then next I went on it I was blocked.
I ended up phoning Ebay and I got a woman on that said someone had used my Ebay account, I said yes it was me, I was on a VPN.
She had no idea what a VPN was and I had to go through a lot of personal questions before she believed me. then I had to change my password before I could use Ebay again.

Another annoying thing I've noticed lately is if say you are browsing a subject and you click on a link, you start to read the first few lines and then all of a sudden a big popup blocks your view, it wants you to register, I wonder how many actually do register to read the page.

It's just going too crazy.
I was on vacation in Poland. I wanted to take money there, and I got on the screen that I was blocked. Poland is an hour flight from here. You can drive it in 13 hours. They actually have the exact same Dutch bank company. I called them 'My card is blocked'. Yeah someone in Poland tried to use your card. 'Yeah, I know, it was me, I am in Poland'. 'Yeah but you never go to Poland so we thought it was weird'. 'Have you ever heard of vacation? And wait what? You track my whereabouts?' What's next? I get blocked in supermarket B because I allways go to A?' I got lucky and they changed it immediatley.
a few months later on vacation I was in Czech. Still very close. We were there by car. And he got blocked for taking money out. Like 20 dollars. He called to his bank. But he was not lucky. He had to come back to the Netherlands first to confirm... I paid my half of the stay to him, so he could pay the hotels. So I was out of money, sorta. We canceled the hotels, luckely we paid for canceling, and stayed for free through an app where locals let you stay for free, met a lot of cool people, but not really had time for romance as we planned. Stupid banks.

@Loopeend, I agree, If I do register to a new website, it asks for a username, so then I'm thinking what shall I use, I think of one, then it wants a password, so I think of one.
Then it says, you need at least one uppercase letter, so I change one of the letters, then it says you need to add at least one number, so I add a number, then it says you need to add a symbol +=/,.* so I add a symbol.
We have sent you an email, please confirm by clicking on the link in the email.
I go to my email, nothing there, so I wait then it pops up, I click on the link and it takes me to the website.
It asks me to login, I login then I get a message, username or password not correct!

I have book now where I write down all my usernames and passwords, some sites I haven't been on for a while so it comes in handy, having said that I've gone to a site and logged in only to get the message that my username and password is incorrect, I've had to send them a (Forgot my Password) message, then after I get a new one I get the opportunity to change it so I change it back to what it was before, what a pain.

I undertand your pain.
Feels safe right?
Me was told to NEVER write your passwords down...
It used to be loopeend. Fine password.
Then loopeend14 (needed 2 numbers)
Loopeend14 (needed an uppercase)
Looopeend14 (was not long enough)
Looopeend14! (needed an symbol)
Looop-eend14! (neede two symbols).
1Looop-eend4! (numbers should not be next to each other)

I remembererd!
But after 3 months it said; you have to change your password..
"1Looop-eend3!'
No, it is not allowed to look like your old password..
"1L0o0p-eEen3!?"
Still the same and unsafe! Can't accept!
'YouArAnno1ing!!canIpleasegetToMyBankAccount??'
Accepted.

Offcourse I forgot and had to ask for a new password USING my new password :')
And I had to go to the office to get a new password, took a week, costs 7 euros..

So I write them down now in an old-fashioned adress book. With pencil. Because they can change every 3 months. Come and get it; hope you have a lot of fun with my BYC-account and my 175 euro's.

deja-vu ! No wonder I struggle if a 30-something with an IT education does (I remember when the web started...:old) and my approach now is to simply close any website that needs a registration for a casual browse :smack and use alternatives - of which there are many. I have pursued my bank's high-handed actions as far as the regulator, and won :celebrate:bow, and even got a bunch of flowers from the bank  for one of their misplaced security blocks. Persevere and refuse to put up with incompetence, that's my motto :D

as for computing generally, and the calibre of most programmers writing these damn algorithms, I think this poster got it in one

I've seen this a few times, for example only yesterday I was looking to buy satellite cable connectors, joining 2 cables together.
Since then I have been on a couple of sites nothing to do with this subject and got adverts for them, I've heard of this before where it is said somewhere what you look at is logged, seems it's right.
Like I said, I've seen this before, at first I thought it was a coincidence but after a few times I know it isn't.
Someone is watching you. In fact, lots of people are watching you.
This site is watching you.;)
This helps.

Setting up your browser correctly for maximum privacy also helps as does the browser you use.

Talking of emails reminds me of the story about the man who was going on a business meeting in Florida, his wife wanted to go with him as it was very cold up north in Chicago.
He said he would send for her after a couple of days when he had concluded his business, so after a couple of days he was in his hotel room after a few drinks at the bar and remembered to email his wife.
So after a few drinks his memory wasn't up to par, and he sent her the email, but what he did was, he sent it to the wrong address, a lady who had just lost her husband got the email.
It read: "Got here OK, it's bloody hot down here, I'll see you tomorrow when you arrive." signed, Your loving husband xxx

@Loopeend, Where are you in Holland, I have a friend in Valthermond, do you know it?

No, I had to google it. And I zoomed out. And then I knew no places around it. And then I needed to zoom out more. And then it seemes to be around Emmen? I have been there once because they have an awesome zoo. At Emmen.
That is in the upper-right, I live in the south near the border at Belgium.
this is going to sound weird;
But that is REALLY far away. It is a 2 hours and 18 minutes drive! I have rarely been to the upper-part of the Netherlands.
We are so small and packed on each other, that we view a drive like that REALLY far away. We need a weekend for that! Which I sometimes have to giggle about, how stupid that is, since I know that for a lot of people from the USA, Australia, Canada, that is a 'normal' drive to meet family/get groceries/etc.
We cycle for an hour or more to work or school, back and forth on a daily basis, but we also feel that people from Valthermond are on the TOTAL other side of the world since it is more then a 2 hour drive :')
It also does not help that it is cheaper to fly to Cracow or Prague then a train or busticket to Emmen.. or Amsterdam.. That makes it feel closer then it actually is. Bus to Prague; 20 euro's. Train ticket to Amsterdam; 40 euro....

You know, I think I am going to book an AirBnB over there :) Since I have seen so little of that part of the Netherlands. Thanks! Say 'Vrouwen? Je kunt beter kippen houden!' to your friend from the Netherlands. :p

Hi Loopend, I did have friend in Brunssum but we parted company a few years ago, she was fairly famous too, shame really, all over a silly mistake on that damn Facebook, it got misinterpreted. I deleted my account on there as well, not because of that though.

I don't know what your exact story is offcourse. But I noticed some people being quite harsh on 'misinterpreted stuff' on facebook. It's all written, not talk, emoji's help a little, but not 100%. I sometimes can't keep up what emoji's to use to nót come of sarcastically or negative in some way. I'm glad BYC is not affected yet by the distrusting-negative side of the internet. Or the activaly trolling. I see a lot of Christian posts on here, and people just don't start a negative rant about how stupid it is to believe in God :O I'm atheist but I see clearly how all over the internet a well-meant positive prayer thing is immediately ruined by some prick that needs to bash. So rare on the internet, that this does not happen here. I see people that eat their chicken, people that are against eating chicken, just getting NOT in a fight. Just respecting.
The rest of the internet is quite aggresive.
