Strange lump under Rooster's beak

Everything could have been from him being confined somewhere he wasn't happy. Chickens will walk back and forth and stick their heads or beaks through fencing to try to get out.

I personally would just give him time. I honestly never look at my birds so closely unless their behaviors are off. If they are acting fine they generally are.

The more you mess with a chicken the more stressed the can get which can compromise their immune system, so I generally leave my birds be and don't ever separate except for pecking or big wounds which I don't see too often either.

Oh! @Liz7 you mentioned that he closes his eyes when you examine touch the face, maybe he is sensitive? It could be, but birds close their eyes when you handle their face/combs/wattles most of the time unless they are really used to you doing so. It would be hard to know if it's painful or not.[/QUOTE]

Yes, you are right, thank you. When I touch them he closes his eyes, but when my husband touched him, he protested, it was a screeching sound. Idkn...maybe just scared.

Roosters will often close their eyes when a hen is tenderly grooming his face, so maybe he thinks of you as a hen. :)

I agree with everyone. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water! He's a gorgeous boy and like the others, I don't see anything cull worthy about him.

In case I've missed it, I haven't seen anything about the description of what the wattle feels like.A benign tumor or cyst will generally feel round and firm like a marble. It will roll under your fingers and is usually of an even texture. A cancer had no discernible margins. It will be hard and anchored.

A swollen wattle from injury or inflammation will feel mushy under your fingers from the fluid and swelling. That's all that I'm seeing with your boy.

Rooster are always doing something to bang themselves up. I am currently treating two roosters with eye injuries, one serious from fighting. They are also very resilient animals. We are amazed at their power to heal their own bodies if given time and supportive care.

IMHO. Your boy looks like he is gentle and not objective to you handling him. I would try to get him to tolerate you putting some warm moist packs on his swollen wattle. This will also give you a chance to handle the wattle and check it over closely for cuts, punctures or injured areas. If you find any open areas, apply a thin coat of Bacitracin antibiotic ointment to the area.

Other wise, Just keeping an eye on him and seeing what if anything happens next is the best advice I can give and also agree with previous posts. I bet you will be surprised.

Based solely on the photos and what you describe, it does look like he just managed to bang himself up a bit and he has a little swelling in one wattle (possibly a bit of lymph etc). How does the texture of it feel if you gently palpate it between your fingers? I had one bang himself up a bit on the fence and the same thing happened, and he recovered just fine. I think you are smart to use caution and to pay such close attention to any changes in your obviously beloved rooster! Don't feel silly for coming here with your concerns.

Absolutely, do not feel that we are dismissing your concerns! It is best to separate and quarantine a bird if you see something you are not sure about. You are paying attention!

Thank you for taking time to post additional photos. Yes, I do see the lump under the beak now. @Nambroth asked some good questions.

O.K. The "wart";) I have a red circle around it - does it look like it has a hole in it? Also it almost looks like it may have been cracked a little at some point or is the beak peeling?

The red arrows - the lower beak has some black, is that from food, did that come off?
The upper beak - it's pointing toward the chonal slit, is that food also?

Yesterday morning the ball was anchored to left wattle, but today morning is rolling and it's changing shapes constantly, it's no really a ball, the margins are more and more sharp or with "pointing corners", cartilage consistency.
The left wattle is growing thicker at the bottom, not mushy at all, it's fleshy and firm, it's taking the shape of a little purse.
The first pic is from April 7, there's the wart thing on his mouth, the other pic is from April 16, the left wattle is growing thicker, now it's double size.

It's not a hole, it's more like when a nail has a fungus and grows something hard. I got him on April 7 and it's been growing since, he didn't get injured at home, he came with that.

That is charcoal, also in my nails, I have been building their dust baths and they love to eat the earth there too. The other thing, I don't know what that is, but I checked his mouth today morning and all seemed ok. The wart thing grows out and not inside.

I am so glad I found this page, without your help I would be chopping my dear roo's head off maybe unnecessarily. And yes, he thinks I am one of his hens!!! :)
