anybody got any idea on whats wrong with one of my Cornish giants? She has a painful looking absess about an inch or more below her vent. She survived the night but is sitting in the corner of the chicken house and doesn't want to go out with the others.

i don't know if its caused from the other birds or not. i suppose its a possibility but why only that one. The rest have fuzzy white clean butts. I'm gonna check on her again this evening at feeding time and tomorrow to see if it's worsened or improved.

Blu-kote that CX's bum! It's sold in the horse department of any farm store. Be careful, as it stains everything it touches blue (including bedding, walls, roosts and you!) That will help minimize any additional picking. You might consider coating a bunch of 'em with blue bums....less of a chance this one would be picked on! (And then name your farm "Blue Bottom Farm"! LOL)

My guess is that even if the other birds aren't the cause of the initial injury, they will continue to peck at it and not let it heal. I agree that blue-kote or wound-kote is the way to go.

Now there seems to be a build up of liquid filling up in the crop area. Think i'm just going to have to put her down tomorrow. Ascites maybe is the affliction but i thought that water buildup only happened around the abdominal area.
