Strange Rooster Behavior. Is this normal??

Howdy yal!
Every morning my rooster waits at the front door to be let out, so he’s the first person who jumps down. But, the past 2 days, he has been doing something strange. As soon as I open the door, he puffes up and makes this strange cluck. The only time I’ve heard this is with a rooster who is attempting to mate with a hen. Once he’s on the ground, he will peck my feet 2 times each foot. Luckily for me, it isn’t a peck-your-toes-off peck, more like he’s hunting for worms or something. Do yal what he is doing? Is he attacking me? Just being crazy? I’ve never had a rooster before so I’m new to all of this! If you guy have any tips for caring for roosters also, I would love to hear them! Thanks in advance!

How old is this boy you're calling rooster?

I wouldn't say he's attacking you... BUT it does sound like he is going through some hormonal change where he might be testing you and consider attacking in the future.

x2! If he's a cockerel (this year's hatch) he's just maturing, and he's thinking bad thoughts. Read beekissed's article about managing roosters, ASAP, and have a plan. He needs to respect your space, and move away, and never flare at you!

He's testing you to see if you're interested in his fabulous rooster booty. Good news, he isn't just clamping on and going for it so he's a gentleman lol! Since he's not being over the top toss a little food out when he acts weird just to take his mind off that misplaced rooster stuff he is doing his mind is simple and easily distracted.

Walk through him just because you can, don't go around him, and make sure he moves away. Throw treats out there, not directly connected to his bad behavior!

I don't buy ALL of it... but it's a VERY good tool to help clue people in.

To me it's important not to be seen as part of the pecking order, not to kick or swing at them as it escalates things. I allow boys to eat but walk through them at will even at the feeder. Use the suggestions and adjust them to work for YOU if you can.

This is a natural hormone raging time for your boy... a challenging time for many. But lots do make it through and become flock leaders respectful of the giant who brings good food.
