My Japanese Bantam has been acting funny today.

She seems to be breathing a little harder than usual, and I can see her throat moving as she breathes. She has also been shaking her head, and she backs up a bit when she does it, like she's seen something strange. She has also been wiping her beak/nose on the ground a lot. She won't eat her regular food, but I did get her to eat some scratch grains and drink some milk. Her activity level is a lot lower today, too.

She started laying a few weeks ago, went broody, then came out of it and started laying again. Now she hasn't laid for several days, and is starting to act broody again. She hasn't had trouble laying before, but I'm wondering if egg problems can start without warning. She walks around slowly sometimes, and I'm wondering if there is an egg in there. We can't feel anything, but I know it's hard to tell sometimes.

She was fine yesterday. It's also been pretty warm today so I thought maybe she was overheated. I brought her inside for a bit, and she ate some bread, but her behavior didn't change.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

She's such a weird little thing! I went out this evening and found her in the nest, and she got mad when I removed her (Ms. Broody is back!), and when I watched her breathing, it was totally normal! I'm wondering if she had a bit of food stuck in her throat and she finally cleared it.

My mind is at ease now.

Anythings possible with chickens. Good luck Ms. Broody. I have one due to hatch hers tomorrow.

Baby won't be hatching any eggs unfortunately...we don't need more chickens! I think she must've had something stuck in her throat and finally dislodged it last night at some point. She's completely normal today!

You know, now that you mention it, I had that happen to one of my hens quite a long time ago. She was absolutely fine the next day. Glad to hear that's the case with your hen.
