I got what was supposed to be a silkie but she isn't growing well and has strange outer toes - can anyone tell me what she is and if she'll develop ok with these feet.
It's not a Silkie, it's something else. Not sure... It's outside toes don't have toenails, right? Could've been a low temp hatch, or any number of things.
Silkies have black skin and five toes. Good luck with whatever breed it is, it's adorable!
I called the feed store and they said Banties were in with the silkies... is a bantie just a non-pure breed? Also I was concerned about this one being small and not feathering evenly, but I just read that uneven feathers could mean it is a rooster. What do you think?
Banties are Bantams or small chickens like a silkie. Some breeds have two sizes Bantam and Standard. They are still a purebred chicken. Just has to do with size as adults.
Your little guy being small may just have to do with his breed vs those of your other chicks.
That chipmunk pattern is in several breeds so you will probably have to wait a little while to know what breed it is. Supply stores like TSC don't sell mutts except the Easter Egger chicks.
What you are talking about is the wing feather sexing. I have noticed when they start to feather it is the wings first, then the shoulders, then the back fills in. The last to feather is the head. They will look funky as they grow out.
