Strange...trumpeting noises? What?

If you have a game camera put it up. Most critters have routes and routines and the chances are great that it may be back and you can get a picture.

If you are in CO it very well could have been an Elk that you heard. That may or may not have been the same animal you saw though. Like perhaps you actually saw a fox but it was chasing an elk and the elk made the trumpet sound as an alarm call to the herd.

I have definitely heard a trumpet like sound from a deer, especially a fawn. When they are excited or scared they have an alarm call that sounds a bit like a trumpet. Perhaps your dogs scared it.

Or, a werewolf.

But really, possibly a deer, they do make weird noises...

The closest I have to elk is deer I’m in north GA.

Ah I saw another person reply they were in CO but it wasn’t the OP. My mistake! Yes, deer can make some weird noises, like groans grunts and moans. And a baaaa like a sheep.
