Oh gosh, that is just awful! You are great for sharing this with us, if I have a poorly chicken I always separate them with a towel over the top, definitely wont be doing that again!
So sorry this happened to you and your little girl, but you are such a fantastic chicken mama! I hope she is better soon, it's amazing what chickens can adapt too.

Sorry, forgot to elaborate. Wrap pipe in towel and completely cover with duct tape. You should not be able to see the towel. Or the bucket if you have the nipples directly in the bucket and no pipe.

Do you use heat tape or regular duct tape? I don't have electricity out in my barn, and I'd worry about using an extension cord with all of the fire hazards they have. If there isn't really a way to keep these types of water from freezing without electricity, I might be able to go out a couple times a day to give her water with a syringe.

Our landlord told us this summer that they wanted to put electricity out in my barn for me, and it has never happened. I've really learned over the past two years how much of a struggle winter is without electricity. :/

The regular silver colored (heavy duty) duct tape. I have also found that the bright yellow one works real good has a lot of glue and good insulation powers. Not sure why on the yellow one vs other colored ones. Designs go on sale around here and you can never have too much duct tape. Any good insulation job that you do should keep it just above freezing.

Update on Sunni. She laid her first egg today!! She is 21 weeks and 5 days old. It's a beautiful brown egg with little white spots. It weighs 1.3 ounces.






Sunni has also started eating small amounts of chicken pellets on her own. She is really improving.

Sunni is drinking water on her own!! She finally figured out how to do it. Now it's her new favorite. She is constantly running to the water for a drink. I am a proud mommy right now.

We have been having some trouble with picking though. Sunni is being pushed to the bottom of the pecking order due to her special needs. I made her a nice mini coop out of a dog crate and she has been sleeping in that at night. She is missing two large pieces of her comb now from the picking.

I have some pictures that of her that I took today. I'll try and get them resized and posted tomorrow.
