Straub’s search for colored eggs

Yesterday was coop cleaning day and a couple pictures of Jersey Gena who is going through a pretty hard molt IMG_6938.jpeg IMG_6937.jpeg IMG_6942.jpeg IMG_6933.jpeg IMG_6936.jpeg IMG_6939.jpeg

Poor Jersey Gena!

I've got to do a coop clean out soon too and add everything to compost pile. Thankfully I have a nice large clean out door just like you do! It's great that yours is perfect for your tailer. I line up the tractor bucket but have to make a few trips.

I’m definitely thankful that past me had the foresight to measure the trailer when I was building the coop.

This is a fun thread to follow!! I love seeing all the different egg colors when a new girl hits laying age. It's so fun to guess what she'll lay

On Thursday morning I slipped and fell and twisted my right knee. X-ray didn’t show and new bone damage just some arthritis, possible loose bodies, and scar tissue from a previous injury. I’m off work and waiting for insurance to OK an MRI. My wife has taken over chicken chores

This morning I actually feel a lot better. Still not ready to do a full day but I at least fixed myself a cup of coffee. I was limping a bit but I didn’t need the crutches so it’s progress.

Oh man that's rough. I hope you don't need surgery. Rest up!

Sorry for your injury. Hope you continue to improve.

Insurance approval. I miss the days when only our family doctors made these decisions. Sometimes insurance approval is a pain and just causes delays in testing and treatment. I've been there myself. I hope your approval comes quickly.

I have an MRI scheduled for Wednesday and a dr appointment for Tuesday the 18th. I’m off work until at least my next Dr appointment. Physically I feel like it’s going in the right direction. As long as I’m wearing a brace I can walk without pain but when I take the brace off the knee doesn’t feel stable. I have been taking on some of the chicken chores while my wife is at work but she still helps when she’s here

The cockerels are just over 14 weeks old and I believe it’s time to send them to freezer camp. Weather wise I looks like the best time would be either tomorrow or next Wednesday. I’m in no shape to chase chickens around at the moment but my hands still work fine so I plan to get my wife and possibly my father in law to help with the catching while I stand or sit at a table and do the knife work.

Once that’s done I’ll have two less feeders to fill and two less drinkers to keep from freezing over. I’ll be down to just the main coop and the breeding pin and both of those are on automatic doors. No more opening tractors in the morning or locking them up at night. No more moving tractors or electric nets.

The crooked toed cockerel is starting to shape up fairly well. He is still smaller than the other one but he is putting on weight pretty well. He does have the straightest keel of any of the five Bresse. His earlobes are the whitest of any of the five birds.

He is going to get a pardon and will not be sent to freezer camp. I’ll keep him around to see how he continues to grow out. As
Long as this foot doesn’t cause any quality of life issues as he puts on more weight I’ll likely give him at least one test breeding to find out if those toes are genetic or an incubator issue.
