Straw bale coop anyone?

I would have to agree with Chicabee, not enough protection on those bales. At least a bigger overhang, if nothing else!

I like the sand floor idea, d.k., for easy cleanups and good drainage.

I watched a show in which a family built a straw bale house, and what they did was stack their bales, kind of interlocked, then put rebar on the outside (the metal mesh) and "sewed," the mesh to the bales, all the way through, then they plastered outside and inside, I guess using a mud based plaster...like a clay base, and then poured a pad inside.... and then you can put your roof on it.

It would be really easy to do.

We just watched a show with a house being built out of straw bales and special stucco on the bales outside and in. It was VERY insulated

I would love to do that. I could prob do it by myself

I like the idea and figured stacking some straw around my current coop would do fine for insulation.

If you like that idea, you might also check out cordwood houses. I'm so building one someday...

I totally agree as we need to have something covering it from the outside so I was thinking of plywood outside. Would I still need some wire down in the ground to keep other critters out?
It rains alot where we live so I am wondering about the sand being a good choice for the floor.
