So my dear Richie Roo has a mighty crow for a silkie boy. I'm allowed to have roosters but since I live in a neighborhood in city limits I have to follow noise ordinances or else risk being turned in for too early/too late crowing and potentially be forced to rehome my boys. So I got creative after reading some on BYC about solutions for your rooster crowing.

*This may not work for everyone but it's working so far for me. *knock on wood*!!!

I took 5 bales of straw and arranged them in a box form in the corner of my garage. It's offset from the wall some and there are gaps in between the bales so plenty of air can get in. There is a divider in the middle so that two boys can be in there at the same time. In general they get along fine but just in case someone decides to not be nice they are separated for the night. I run a box fan in the garage for a white noise and my garage has no windows so it's pretty dark. So far so good. No crowing until I let them out in the morning. My dogs sleep in the garage too (they are crated) and it's insulated so it never gets too hot or too cold.
Here's some pics, feedback is welcome

Sorry the picture quality stinks the lighting is horrible in the garage and I used my camera phone out of laziness!

So far they aren't crowing. I think it's the combination of being in a small space, not hearing a lot of noises and it being pretty dark. The idea behind the straw was to muffle the noise as well. So if they do start crowing the neighbors surely won't hear it.

I mean really putting straw bales, a insulated garage, 30+ feet and then their own house walls in between them and a bantam crow I'd think they were lying if they said it woke them up or something ya know?

I'm going to try this when my new flock starts crowing.

My bedroom window faces the coop and I sleep with the window open. My last rooster would raise me off the bed when he crowed! Here in Alaska in the summer it is light all night long and they never quit. Land of the midnight sun and no sleep.

So one bale is the door? And it is on top like your picture? Was just wondering if he got upset when the bale is lowered on the top? I might make a side door and place a bale against it after he is in.

I just roll the closest bale towards me on the top put my blue roo in there, pop in the divider put Richie in and roll the bale back over. Neither of them care but I also put them up at dusk so they are both pretty chill because it's sleepy time

That is a great idea!

I'm wondering if maybe a big dog crate would be a little safer, then surround it with bales. I'd be nervous that one of the bales would slip and squash the poor guys!

I thought if it didn't help squelch the crowing I'd put them in travel dog crates that are their size so they have a lower roof. The over lap of the bales of the roof on top of the bales that make the base is about 8 inches on each side so I really don't think they will slip but that's a good thought

Holy cow really? Somebody really did that? Wow! I guess that would work too but I would think the rooster wouldn't be getting enough air!
