Hiya, and sorry I'm late but welcome to BYC!

I've been shocked by putting little ones in with a rooster and a couple of hens in a huge pen with dual feed/water stations and some things for hiding behind, only to find one of the non-broody hens chose to be mom to them. I did not expect it, but seen it happen a few times this year. These chicks were always two to three weeks old. Our roosters also have never hurt a little one, and only defend them.
