Straw in coop?

they do pull the bale apart - but it keeps them busy and happy. Sometimes if I am running short, I only give them a portion of the bale - they do the spreading around! works great for deep litter method.

We tried using straw for nesting materials and the girls literally picked each piece out and threw it on the ground! I stood there laughing my head off one day when our Red Star was throwing out the straw and giving my dirty looks with each piece. We now use shavings and they are much happier and the eggs stay nice and clean too.

May be compost starter might help to break down shavings. We haven't tried composting yet since this is the first year we have had chickens.
