I'd use sand in the run. They love to have sand baths and scratch about. You could use pressure treated boards around the perimeter and fill with 4 to 5 inches of sand. Some use sand in the coop too and praise the ease of cleaning it. I use pine chips in the coop, hay in nesting boxes.
