Stray chicken. What do I do?, and it’s been SO hot.

She will need extra calcium so any eggs she lays take the shells and crush them up and feed it to her. Crushed oyster shell would be a good idea too.

I have read that feeding plain crushed egg shells to chickens may cause them to peck at, break, and eat eggs out of the nest.

Consequently, according to this authority, one should always boil or bake egg shells to change the smell, then crush them up well before adding them into food, never offering egg shells alone, or in recognizable pieces.

Is there anything to such advice?

I microwave my eggshells before crushing them and mixing them with my chickens’ feed.

Good lord.people do the worst things.
My free range leghorn looks like a glossy show bird and this poor thing.. well, people did this.
honestly, I've never had a leghorn before and did not realize they could be so beautiful. Given a normal chicken life they are really quite good looking, beautiful birds

I was surprised by mine years ago. They are long gone now but are on my get them again list. I miss them in the flock.

This thread and that picture have just been too much. There is an Amish egg barn near us that sells off "scrap" chickens each fall for 25 cents (white egg layer) or 50 cents (brown egg layer) each.
Yeah, seriously. 25 or 50 cents.
I'm going call and get some this year.
I mean WTH. How people can look at a picture of a factory bird vs a backyard bird and be ok with it, I have no idea.
I'm no vegan, I'm no vegetarian, but this is something I can help with.
