I have four 1week old poults. The smallest one keeps running around the edges of the brooder chirping loudly. She doesn’t seem to be interested in eating or drinking like the others. She is frantically looking for a way out. I’ve seen them gobble down small strands of pine shavings. Is it okay to give chick grit to baby turkeys?

I didn’t know if it was too soon to give grit at 1 week. I wasn’t planning on giving it to them until I took them outside to forage. Just seeing them eat strings of pine shavings has me worried they won’t be able to digest it.

I brood baby chicks in my run on sand. They eat grit at one day old. When a broody raises chicks, the chicks eat grit at one day old. I've never lost a chick to grit. Chicks and poults have been eating grit at one day old for thousands of years. They seem to realize they have gizzards and what grit is for.

Do you use chick grit or regular for 4-6 week old?
