Stubborn Fiancee says I don't need more ventilation.

You won't need to worry about windows in the coop if you don't get a LOT of ventilation in there right away. Our coops are hardware cloth on 3 sides and they have fans on during the day. Florida is too hot for northern type coops.

When I built my coop, my biggest concern was the very hot summers along with pretty cold winters that we have living in OK. However, I lived in Clearwater, FL for 16 yrs and if I was still there and knowing what I know now, I would only have a 3 sided coop, with one side being nothing but hardware wire and I would still put ventilation on the other sides just to get a cross breeze. In your case where you live, I don't think you could have "too much" ventilation, just think about protection from wind and rain when you do put some in.

Show him this coop.I'm in Texas & its hot!!!

My chickens don't even have a proper coop. They live in covered runs, and have dog kennels that we've taken apart and they get under them. They roost outside of the kennels though and only use them to lay in. They do get in them if it is raining. At any rate, I've never had problems with the heat. My pens are under trees too though and that helps a LOT.

No way I'd have them in a coop without LOTS and LOTS of ventilation. I am in SE Ga and it's been 95+ the last several days.

my husand did the same thing, he wouldnt give in at all so i went out and cut a big window in it, and covered it with hardware cloth, in winter i just cover with a plywood cover and undo it when it warms up .i knew i would have dead chickens he thinks im stupid but im not.

I'm in Indiana, have two vents and two windows, and really, I STILL need more ventilation, as it gets HOT in there in summer time; I can't imagine what it'd be like in Florida. If he won't get some air going inside that oven, then do as HFeathers suggested - break out a skillsaw, a jig saw - something and cut out some good sized openings yourself. Just screw hardware cloth over them (washers work great to hold HW cloth on securely).

Find Patandchickens big ole ventilation page and read it to him! If you look at my page you can see how I started with a solid coopin April, then as it got warmer in May I cut holes in it for air flow and then as it got downright hot here lately, I've replaced three sides with hardware cloth. My DBF hating having to do it but it's was a real need. I think I'm finally content now that they're comfortable. Good luck!
