I have a stuck keet (is it ok to post a question about a guinea here?) in it's shell about 24 hrs now. I thought it had hatched this morning, but realized it hadn't-long story..

Anyway, there is a hole and it's bigger than yesterday, but it can't seem to get out-hole is not big enough. I don't know if it's stuck to the shell, too weak, or tired, or just doesn't know how to get out! It peeps, struggles occasionally and wants out! I'm afraid it's not going to get out on it's own and it's only hope might be me helping it out.

If I decide to help it, can anyone tell me how to go about it?
And, at what point? 24 hrs, 48 hours?

TIA,

HAE

Well, this is what I do if I find the chick can't move in the shell after about 36 hours of pipping. Where it would normally zip around, I would carefully break off pieces of shell without touching the membrane. If the membrane looks dry under that shell, use some warm water and dab it to moisten it. If you see any blood or the membrane still looks wet, wait a few more hours, it is not ready. Now, if the blood vessels are all gone from the outside, and you can get all around the shell, you can carefully take the membrane off. Key point is to make sure it doesnt bleed, because that is key to saying it is not ready. Everybody has their own method to doing this.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice, silkiechicken! I did help the keet, as I just really felt he was not making any progress-I could see his beak the whole time, and he wasn't even trying to peck the shell. His membrane was not stuck, so I'm not sure why he wasn't hatching normally, but he seems fine. He's still rolling around in the incubator right now, but he looks normal at this point.

It was very scary to take him out and help him, but I am glad I did-I'm sure he's glad to be out of there as well!

Silkelovr-did your chick not make it or did it absorb the yolk and do ok?

Yes the chick was fine but most of the time when I hear people have this prblem it dies but this one didnt because I took extraordinary care so he didnt!
